Somewhere in an alternate universe, the Mercedes-Benz Metris might have been called Sprinter Junior: it's both a more recent addition to the Benz lineup of commercial-grade vehicles and is a more compact model that, in North America, is sized closer to a minivan than the full-size vans Sprinter competes with.
But unlike minivans, Metris comes in a cargo van configuration, alongside a passenger model covered in a separate buyer's guide entry.
News for 2017 includes blind spot assist as a standalone option (it was formerly only offered in a package), a new available wheel design and a standard wide-angle passenger side mirror.
For North America, Metris comes with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Optional is an eco start/stop function for the engine.
Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption estimates are 11.1/9.1 L/100 km (city/highway).
Standard features include 17-inch steel wheels (alloys are available), black bumpers, mirrors and door handles, a single right-side sliding door, air conditioning, tilt steering, automatic headlights, power windows, tire pressure monitoring, manual seat adjustments, cloth upholstery, stereo with 5.8-inch TFT display and USB input and Bluetooth.
Options include a cargo lighting package, extra rear windows and load securing rails.
A convenience package adds multifunction steering wheel, cruise control and trip computer.
Heated front seats and auxiliary heating come together in the cold weather package.
A driving assistance group bundles leather-trimmed steering wheel with heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, forward collision warning, blind spot monitor, lane keeping assist and an overhead console with reading lights.
A comfort seat package brings more supportive chairs with adjustable lumbar.
Metris cargo van pricing starts at $33,900.
